Tips for Buying a Used Car Online
Buying a used car online is easier than ever before. You have instant access to thousands of pre-owned cars. Every make and model is available. Perhaps more importantly, you can get information on the overall safety and reliability of a particular model-year vehicle, as well as used car history reports for specific vehicles that pique your interest.
But how do you know if you are getting a great deal or buying someone else's problems? Here are a few used car-buying tips to keep in mind:
- Look for cars that are "Certified Pre-Owned" by the manufacturer. Certified pre-owned cars often come with warrantees that take the risk out of buying a used car.
- Before you personally inspect, or hire a mechanic to inspect, a used car, be sure to copy down its VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Then, view its history report online.
- Sometimes, people don't report all problems or issues properly, and therefore they don't show up in the used car history report. So even if the used car history report looks OK, it's still a good idea to hire a mechanic to look at a used car before you buy it. This is a small investment that can help you avoid large bills (and frustration) in the future. This step is especially important if you are buying a used car in another city or state and you can't take a look for yourself.
- When you ask questions about the car, also ask questions about the seller. Why are they selling the car? Are they the original owner? Were they ever in an accident in the vehicle? Do they have the service records for the car? Their answers will tell you about the owner - and how well they've taken care of their used car.
- If you go to see the car, go during the day. In darkness, it's too hard to evaluate. So go in the day when you can look for rust, tire wear, and details like the condition of the interior.
